The Story Behind Sterling Ascots

While shopping for a weekend trip to Miami in July 2014, J. Sterling wanted to try something different for evening attire. Normally, a bow tie or a skinny tie along with a shirt and blazer would suffice but seeing that Miami is a humid place in the summer, the idea to purchase ascots came into play. After a day of shopping in New York City, the hunt for ascots was an unsuccessful one. After further research, it turns out that there was no store selling ascots in the nation’s fashion capital. This resulted in J. Sterling turning to his grandmother Pearl, formerly manager of dressmaking at McCall’s Butterick & Vogue, to help design and develop 4 ascots in her sewing room to take to Miami.

Upon enjoying Miami’s nightlife in a number of ascots, positive feedback was received at restaurants and clubs such as Prime 112; Joe’s Stone Crab; Hakkasan Miami; and Club Liv (Nightclub) at the Fontainebleau Hotel Miami Beach. Upon returning home J. Sterling met with his younger sister, Ayanna Soleil, about starting an ascot line. Soleil, a student of LIM (Long Island Merchandising) College at the time majoring in merchandising, gave the thumbs up on the idea and the siblings broke ground on the ascot line.

The Sterling Ascot is not just another ascot. The prints used for our ascots were personally hand selected by the siblings both domestically and internationally. Our ascots consist of top grade silk and microfiber. Whether it’s a microfiber ascot for the customer new to ascots or one of our vibrant lightweight 12 and 14 millimeter silk ascots for the seasoned ascot veteran, we have something for everyone and we promise our ascots are never generic.
